Pangrok Sulap

Pangrok Sulap is an art collective founded in 2010 in Ranau, Sabah. It consists of artists, curators, musicians, designers, writers, and community activists. This diversity makes the collective dynamic and enables it to run a wide range of art-related programs. Their mission is to empower communities through art, focusing on social, cultural, economic, and educational development.

Since 2013, woodcut has become their main medium for spreading social messages—through exhibitions, handmade merchandise, and banners. They strongly embrace the DIY spirit with their slogan “Jangan Beli, Bikin Sendiri” (Don’t Buy, Do-It-Yourself).

In 2019, Pangrok Sulap moved to Kota Kinabalu to grow their connections with the local art scene. In 2022, they established Ruang Tamu Ekosistem, a community art space. By 2024, they launched a residency program to promote alternative education, collaboration, and stronger ties between art and communities.

This series of six black-and-white prints reflects Pangrok Sulap’s ongoing commitment to telling stories from the ground—stories of resistance, identity, and the lived realities of communities across Sabah. Using woodcut and silkscreen techniques, we draw attention to urgent social and environmental issues, working in solidarity with those most affected by unjust development and cultural erasure.

1. “Save Ulu Papar – Stop Papar Dam” opposes a dam project that threatens indigenous lands and ecosystems.

2. “Rakyat Bersatu Lawan Tirani” calls for collective resistance against oppressive systems.

3. “Di Belakang Saya Ada Orang Kampung, Di Belakang Orang Kampung Ada Saya” expresses our shared responsibility to stand with rural communities.

4. “People of the Land” celebrates indigenous identity and ancestral connection to place.

5. “Beads Not Dead” honours traditional crafts as a living, evolving part of culture.

6. “Gara-Gara Karbon Semua Jadi Korban” critiques the destructive cost of carbon-driven development.

All works are hand-printed on manila card using either offset or rubber-based ink, staying true to our DIY ethos. Through these prints, we aim to amplify voices from the margins, spark conversation, and inspire collective action grounded in empathy, justice, and solidarity.
