Title : The Botanical Map of Borneo
Medium : Ink on hot press paper
Size : A2
Year : 2022
The Botanical Map of Borneo is a deeply personal, hand-drawn work that honors the island’s rich ecological and cultural tapestry. Each illustrated plant is carefully chosen to reflect the deep-rooted connections between the flora of this land and the lives, intertwining with the importance of Indigenous communities as stewards of the land they live in.
This map is more than a visual record, it is a cultural offering. It celebrates the ancestral wisdom embedded in our natural world, where every plant tells a story of healing, sustenance, and identity. In a time of accelerating biodiversity loss and cultural erasure, it serves as both reminder and resistance calling attention to the urgency of protecting Borneo’s landscapes and lifeways.
I hope this work inspires future generations, especially the youth, to take pride in their heritage and the island called home. The preservation of our island’s biodiversity is not just an environmental issue—it is a cultural imperative. Through this map, I seek to affirm the sacred bond between nature and identity.
